CINAHL up and running again

In our latest updates on the Library web pages, several links got broken. The link to the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature - CINAHL is now fixed on the page for the magazines and journals.

If you are off campus you will be asked for your barcode and password before being allowed to search. Check with the library if you have trouble getting in.

Films on Demand

This summer the Library has added an online film service with many educational films supporting our college curriculum. There is a large segment of Health and Medicine films, many of which might be useful for you in reviewing material. There are over 460 films on Diseases and Conditions, and another 275 or more on Anatomy and Physiology.

The link to Films on Demand is below on the right, and you have been sent the passwords in your NDSCS mail. If you need to ask us for them, be sure to give us your ID number when you call so we can verify that you are authorized to look at the films. Your instructors also have the passwords and will probably be assigning films as part of your classwork.

Welcome to all the new students at NDSCS this fall, and a welcome back to those who are returning to the campus. We are glad to have you all here and are ready to work with you to make your college experience a success.

In Nursing and all the health sciences, scholarly and professional materials are necessary for you to complete many reports and projects. This blog has many links to help you, and the LibGuide on Nursing Resources is a quick and easy way to learn more about them. The LibGuides also have a Mobile friendly spot, so you can connect easily no matter where you are.

It's National Library Week

Take a break from studying for exams and completing projects. There are activities in the library this week in honor of National Library Week. Today we have "Guess the Staff", where you can win a prize for correctly guessing which book goes with which staff member.

APA new edition updates

The new version of the APA style manual has been published, and unfortunately it is full of errors and typographical mistakes. APA has sent out the following update to the version, which is useful for you in using the new edition if your instructor requires it.

Research Guide to Nursing

This online guide replaces our printed guide, with lists and links that can be accessed directly from the LibGuide site. This will be updated as materials are received or changed, so you will want to check it out when you have papers and projects. As always, let us know what would be useful for you to have added to the site.

The orientation in the library is designed to help you begin to learn where to find the resources you will need as you go on.

The worksheets for the class are part of your lab grade.

Nursing 102 & The Library

The library orientation for Nursing 102 focuses on Internet documents and how to determine if any materials you find are suitable for reserch papers and other projects in nursing classes. A worksheet with exercises on authority, accuracy, currency and objectivity will help you learn how to evaluate any Internet document. Additional material on using APA format is also a part of the session.

The worksheet points are included in your lab grade and are due at the end of the week after the session.

Do you know about Smarthinking? This is a service that NDSCS supports to help you with tutoring or topic help 24/7. For nursing students, there is help with Introductory anatomy & Physiology, Math, Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Writing. You can ask questions, interact with a tutor, and submit writing for a critique.

You will need a username and password to get started that you can get from an Instructor or from the library. Once you have accessed the site, you set up your personal username and password so you can access the site at any time.

Micromedex

The Micromedex Academic Program provides you with access to evidence based information, the same that is used in hospitals across the country. This year there are several new features. Check with your instructor about access, as this is restricted to students in healthcare programs and requires a password to log on.

The History of Nursing Web site

The official web site of the American Association for the History of Nursing is a rich site for resources, some even that focus on students and their need for resources on the leaders and prominent nurses. There is a student primer at

Trial on new database

Natural Standard - alternative medicine

Several people have asked me about information on alternative medicines. We have started a trial with a database called Natural Standard. Here you can find information on safety, efficacy, research, interactions and so on. Research is cited to back up their information, and you can see a quick "Clinical Bottom Line."

New Connection to Cinahl

The link on this page to Cinahl has now been updated, taking you directly to the Ebscohost page. At this point you will be asked for your barcode and password if you are off campus.

If you have activated your ID with the library or have been issued a yellow library card, you have your barcode. You should also know your password. Please be sure to check with the library if you have any problems with access. We want to be sure you are able to get your materials.

Cinahl Connection

Hi everyone - we are having a problem getting the URL for Cinahl updated from this link. If you need to use Cinahl, use the first method I showed you by going to the Library web page and going through Resources -> Magazine and Journal Articles -> Cinahl with full Text -> Ebscohost page. At this point you will need to enter your barcode and your password, then you can select Cinahl Plus with Full Text from the Ebscohost page.

Nursing Reference Center

This new reference for nurses is a point-of-care tool designed to provide clinical resources. It includes evidence-based disease & condition information written specifically for nurses, as well as patient education content and drug & reference information from top publishers.

Examples of included information are: CINAHL Nursing Guide; reference books; drug information; patient education documents; and continuing education modules. You will want to check out all the additional helps as well.

Help with Searching - Tutorials

The more you go into the Nursing Literature, the more capable you have to be to find the articles you need to support your research. You probably need to do some of the tutorials on the North Dakota State Library’s Instructional Tutorial Page. These tutorials are designed to instruct you in using the ODIN catalog and the Online Library Resources. If you are having trouble viewing the tutorials, you may have to adjust your computer display settings. You may need to download Adobe Flash Player, install Microsoft PowerPoint (ppt), or adjust your volume to view some tutorials.

The National Library of Medicine has a new site for drug information that is easy to search for reliable and easily comprehensible information that is current. Sources are generally key government agencies. This is a site you will want to come back to again and again.

Journal Articles or Books?

Nursing instructors very often specify that you use nursing articles in your papers and reports. Yet sometimes all you can find is advanced material that you are not yet ready for. Books, particularly reference books, can help you with this gap. The Library has many books that give definitions, examples, explanations, signs, pathophysiology, and so on. Some of our NetLibrary online books also deal with nursing topics. Save yourself some time and effort by reading up on a topic from a good reference source and you will understand your article better. Since you won't be citing the book, it can be older than 3 years and still give you valuable background. This is a perfect example of working smarter, not harder.

CINAHL

Do you know CINAHL? This is a database to articles in nursing and allied health. The initials stand for the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. The Library purchases access to this database, which provides both complete articles (full text) and citations to articles. We own some of the journals here in the library, or we can request articles from other libraries.

If you are on campus, you can go straight to the database. If you are off campus, the library link will take you to a login page where you can use your library ID and password. Check with the Library Service Desk to be sure your ID is activated for use.

Everything in CINAHL is considered appropriate for use in your nursing classes, but not everything is nursing. Check with your instructor if you are not sure if an article is appropriate for your particular assignment.

Centers for Disease Control - CDC

One of the most important sites you will want to be familiar with is the CDC. This is a government site that provides extensive, searchable information and statistics related to prevention, incidence, and immunization guidelines related to communicable diseases. It includes full text copies of the MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.)

It also gives information on diseases and conditions, with links to many related sites on those topics. A great starting point for case studies and patient education reports.
